Summary

At Gander Outdoors, a Market Director is responsible for driving sales and profit within an assigned district. The Market Director ensures the strategic direction for the designated district is executed by partnering with other senior leaders of the store operations team in growing the business to be the country’s premier outdoor lifestyle retailer. This position is based in Minnesota.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  1. Develop store managers to support store growth and improvement; partner with HR and store managers to establish recruiting networks to identify and hire top retail talent, and to ensure that ongoing orientation, training and development programs are in place to meet anticipated business needs.
  2. Ensure that stores are appropriately stocked and merchandised to Gander Mountain standards; collaborate with merchant team and store ops leadership team on matters of regional and local assortment plans and in-stocks.
  3. Provide leadership and guidance to ensure that stores are driving a sales culture and providing outstanding customer service and building long-term relationships with customers.
  4. Ensure stores are operating professionally with appropriate internal processes and controls.
  5. Network within the general retail industry, as well as the outdoor lifestyle sector, to remain current with the competitive environment and consumer climate; proactively recommend adjustments in company plans and processes to address the marketplace.
  6. Build relationships with regional and local organizations and media whose support and focus is the outdoor lifestyle sector.
  7. Partner with Base Camp leaders to represent the Company in state or regional regulatory or compliance matters.
  8. Communicate strategy and annual goals throughout the district; ensure that alignment exists between company, departmental, and individual objectives; facilitate implementation of “best practices” across the region.
  9. Monitor expense control within the district on store payroll and general expense to ensure district is consistently meeting or exceeding expense goals and guidelines.

 

Non-Essential Functions:

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s in Business or equivalent discipline.

Years of Experience:

  • 6+ years of progressively responsible retail sales and operations experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Other Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to manage the P&L and overall sales and operations of a multi-store environment; big-box district with $75M+ in sales volume.
  • Advanced leadership skills with the ability to pull together a team.
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and written, clearly and concisely and interact effectively at all levels and across the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to act independently while maintaining collaborative partnerships.
  • Advanced knowledge of the retail sector; outdoor retail experience preferred.
