917 - Apparel (BC) - Director, Merchandising-Apparel


The Director, Merchandising - Apparel is responsible for driving the overall success of the assigned categories through strategic product assortment direction, visual merchandising guidance, marketing strategies and vendor negotiations.  The Director of Merchandising leads the Product Managers to achieve results and grow the assigned categories.


Essential Functions:           

  • Analyze, direct and build assortments, pricing strategy and product specific initiatives and identify growth opportunities in core business categories.
  • Understand and react to changing market trends in order to ensure competitive advantage.
  • Collaborate with internal partners on assortment and financial planning/floor presentation/marketing.
  • Work with vendors to build marketing strategies to support assortments and maximize financial plans.
  • Effectively evaluate vendor performance to maximize sales, inventory turnover, margin dollars and margin rate to achieve desired financial results.
  • Work with product development to identify emerging market trends and create new products that give Gander a competitive advantage.
  • Work cross functionally with marketing and product development to develop the vision and strategy for driving the success of the assigned categories.
  • Communicate the strategy and vision and work cross-functionally with the merchandising, planning, allocation, and replenishment teams.
  • Utilize all available channels to assure proactive communication with the Stores and Base Camp Teams.
  • Ensure team is accomplishing objectives and reacting to changing business trends as necessary by mentoring, coaching, and developing individual team members. 

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Complete other duties as assigned. 


Education/Years of Experience:

  • BA/BS in Merchandising, Business or Finance and 10+ years of experience in merchandising and product development.
  • 5+ years’ experience leading and developing high performing teams.

Other Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to analyze and improve processes, measure results, and achieve financial goals.
  • Strong business, analytical and financial skills along with proven negation skills
  • Entrepreneurial minded, creative, free thinker with a strong comfort for taking measurable risks
  • Demonstrated organizing and prioritizing skills, attention to detail, and initiative in completing tasks.
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and written, clearly and concisely and interact effectively at all levels and across the organization.
  • Experience in assessing customers, markets, and industry trends.
  • Proven team leader with experience in areas of mentoring, coaching, and employee development.
